Een andere salafistische militant, de 22-jarige Abdallah Telbani, werd disndag gedood toen een raket zijn tuktuk trof. Israel verklaarde dat ook hij een aanval aan het voorbereiden was, en wel via de grens met Egypte.

GOLF ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Grand debut for DiLisio

Isabella Dilisio of Mt. St. Joseph hits a tee shot at districts in New Hanover Township. Tuesday, October 11, 2011. photo by Geoff Patton

For Isabella DiLisio, the enjoyment of playing golf comes from its challenges.

?I just like the competition aspect of it,? she said. ?It?s just a fun sport overall.?

In just her first varsity season, the Hatfield resident and Mount St. Joseph freshman gave herself a chance to face some tough competition. And DiLisio, The Reporter?s 2011 Athlete of the Year for golf, showed she was more ready to play at that level.

After winning the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies title, DiLisio claimed top five finishes in both the District One and the East Regional tournaments, then capped off the postseason by capturing third place at the PIAA Championships.

?I did pretty well for being a freshman,? she said.

On the first day of states, which were held at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York, DiLisio birdied the fourth and 17th holes as she carded a 75. She had one birdie the following day on the second hole as she carded an 81 and completed the two rounds at 12-over 156.

?I was happy to get to states and do as well as I did,? she said.

DiLisio?s finish was part of an impressive showing by District One underclassmen at states. Council Rock North sophomore Erica Herr took first, while Pennsbury sophomore Jackie Rogowicz was second.

?We know each other?s strengths and differences. We know what each other?s all about,? said DiLisio of Herr and Rogowicz. ?I know it?ll be like that the next couple of years.?

The opening round of the District One Championships at Gilbersville Golf Course, DiLisio was paired with both Herr and Rogowicz and carded a 78 to sit in fourth and help Mount St. Joseph take second in districts as a team. Continued...

?It?s fun. It?s always a challenge playing with Erica and Jackie,? said DiLisio after the first day of districts. ?Jackie?s one of my best friends. So, it?s always fun to play with good people.?

The next day at Turtle Creek Golf Course, DiLisio?s 74 was the lowest score of the round as she claimed third with a total of 152.

?I played a lot better today than yesterday,? said DiLisio following the round. ?Made a couple more putts. Still lipped out on a couple of them. Hit the ball pretty well, too.?

DiLisio then qualified for states when she took fifth place at the PIAA East Regional Championships. She birdied holes two and 15 to end the round at 5-over 77.

?That was definitely a goal to get to states,? she said. ?Even when I wasn?t in high school... that was always on of my main goals.?

DiLisio said she was looking to work on her game during the winter. When the weather gets warmer she will play in American Junior Golf Association, state and regional tournaments.

?Competition?s always fun for me,? she said.

Earth's northern half plunged into darkness by axial tilt! Will sunlight ever return?

It sure will! The Winter Solstice occurs at 12:30 a.m. EST. After that, the days will start getting longer again.?

Winter officially arrives late Wednesday or in the wee hours of Thursday, depending on the time zone you are in.

The official time corresponds to 12:30 a.m. EST (9:30 p.m. PST, or 5:30 a.m. Universal Time) Thursday (Dec. 22). This is the point when the northern half of our planet will face directly away from the sun.

This means that days, which have up until now been growing shorter in the Northern Hemisphere, will begin to lengthen.

This happens because the Earth rotates on an axis that is tilted by 23.5 degrees, so the planet leans one way or another as it travels around the sun. This doesn't make much difference for folks living around the Earth's equator, but for those of us farther north, or south, this tilt?creates seasons.

The winter solstice marks the end of fall and the beginning of winter. During the solstice, the northern half of the Earth is facing away from the sun, hence it will experience its shortest day of the year as the planet rotates.

The effect of this tilt, and of the solstice, depends on your latitude. Everything above the Arctic Circle will remainshrouded in darkness, with no sun?that day, and to the north,?the North Pole?goes without sunlight for months. Farther south in the Northern Hemisphere, the solstice day becomes longer.

The opposite occurs in the Southern Hemisphere. There, the December solstice marks the arrival of summer. ?

For those of us in the north, the days may begin to grow longer, but the coldest days are still to come. This is because ocean temperatures?drive much of the weather?on the continents, and they continue to cool in the relative lack of sunlight this time of year.?

Priests brawl in Bethlehem church

Palestinian police restore order in the Church of the Nativity in Jesus's birthplace after scuffles erupt between Armenian and Greek Orthodox clergymen. Nick Rowlands reports.

A brawl has erupted between rival clergymen participating in an annual cleaning ritual at the church built at Jesus's traditional birthplace.

Armenian Orthodox and Greek Orthodox clergymen screamed at each other and beat each other with broomsticks during Wednesday's clean-up inside the Church of the Nativity in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

They were tidying up the church ahead of Orthodox Christmas celebrations in early January.

The two denominations each control sections of the church and fiercely guard their turf. The violence broke out when the sides accused each other of crossing into each other's territory. Similar fights have taken place in past years.

Palestinian security forces broke up the melee, and no serious injuries were reported.

Boxing Day Shopping in Canada

Boxing Day shopping in Canada, like the shopping on Black Friday after Thanksgiving in the U.S., is madness. The day after Christmas, Canadians shake off their tryptophan and egg nog induced sluggishness, grease up their elbows and hit the stores for Boxing Day bargains. Although an official holiday, stores open up to hawk their wares. Many stores offer "Boxing Week" deals, but people are lined up bright and early (as in 5 am and earler) on the 26th just to be sure.

1. Where to Shop on Boxing Day

Pretty much every store in the country jumps on the Boxing Day bandwagon and advertises huge savings. Malls and big box stores will be open. Some smaller, privately owned stores, may stay closed over the holidays.

Some of the stores offering Boxing Day bargains will be familiar to visitors to Canada: Wal-Mart Canada and Home Depot Canada offer up all sorts of stuff and will be busting at the seams Boxing Day.

Michaels arts and crafts store puts out Christmas decorations at big savings.

2. Stores in Canada

  • Winners Winners, like TJ Maxx and Filene's Basement in the U.S., sells designer labels at up to 60% off regular prices.
  • The Bay, Zellers and Home Outfitters comprise a Canadian family of department stores across the country.
  • Pier 1 Imports is in Canada and Mexico, but not the U.S., and has home decor and furnishings.
  • Shoppers Drug Mart is a large drugstore chain that will have Christmas ware, chocolates, gift boxes and more on sale.
  • Future Shop and Best Buy both offer electronics and appliances and have sales that have shoppers lining up for hours.
  • Canadian Tire is a home renovation, tools and hardware store, as is Home Hardware.

3. Find a Deal

Smart Canucks is a Canadian deals blog, where you can get updated on shopping deals across the country and download flyers and coupons. Red Flag Deals, "Canada's Bargain Hunting Community" is a similar resource for shoppers.

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Final Destination 5 and Apollo 18

Plus, a few other choices during this post-Christmas lull.

It's shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that the home video choices this week are rather slim; most studios try to make sure they have all of their best stuff ready to go before Christmas, naturally. With that in mind, we bring you an abbreviated edition of RT on DVD, focusing on just five new releases that are hitting shelves. For those of you who are also avid television-watchers, some items of interest we won't be covering include Season 2 of the animated series Archer, the first seasons of two Showtime dramas The Borgias and Shameless, and the first season of IFC sitcom The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, which stars Arrested Development alumni David Cross and Will Arnett. That said, we will be covering two horror movies, a raunchy comedy, a Romanian film, and a fascinating documentary. See below for the full list!

South Korea peace seekers meet new leader of the North

A delegation led by two South Korean widows, both linked to the failed Sunshine policy of North-South reconciliation, met with North Korea's Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang Monday.

The widow of a former South Korean president invoked memories of the brightest moment in North-South relations Monday as she visited the bier in Pyongyang of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il.

Mr. Kim's successor, Kim Jong-un,?stood quietly by as 90-year-old Lee Hee-ho wrote that she hoped ?the spirit of the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration? ? signed by her late husband Kim Dae-jung and Kim Jong-il in June 2000 ? ?would be carried forward to achieved national reunification as soon as possible.?

Ms. Lee's visit was a poignant reminder of the hopes from that earlier summit and South Korea's failed Sunshine policy of reconciliation with the North. That effort stalled as North Korea forged ahead with nuclear and missile programs.?South Korea's current president,?Lee Myung-bak, ended the Sunshine policy but allowed Lee to undertake today's trip.

The decision to permit her and another widow deeply involved in North Korea to lead condolence delegations to Pyongyang represents more of a special exception rather than a significant olive branch.?The government denied permission for all other South Koreans,?notably politicians critical of its hard-line policy.

But Lee and Hyun Jeong-un, widow of Hyundai chairman Chung Mong-hun?whose company opened up special zones for business and tourism in North Korea, had?personal and historical ties that could not be ignored.?Lee's husband, who died in 2009, won the Nobel Peace Prize six months after the North-South summit. Mr. Chung committed suicide in 2003 after his indictment for passing enormous bribes to persuade Kim Jong-il to agree to the summit.

For Lee, the journey by road to Pyongyang marked her first visit to North Korea since she flew there with her husband for the summit. Her yearning for a return to her husband?s Sunshine policy is shared by many of her husband?s allies and followers, but she avoided bitterness before entering North Korea at the truce village of Panmunjom 40 miles north of here.

In a statement read by an aide, Lee said simply, "I hope that our trip to North Korea will help improve relations between South and North Korea.?

Preventive care: It's free, except when it's not

In this photo taken Dec. 2, 2011, Bill Dunphy poses for a photo in Phoenix. Dunphy, a 61-year-old small business owner, thought his colonoscopy would be free under the nation's year-old health care law. But when the doctor removed two non-cancerous polyps, turning a preventive screening into a diagnostic procedure, it allowed his insurance company to bill him $1,100. "That's bait and switch," Dunphy said. "If it isn't fraud, it's immoral." (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin)

"That's bait and switch," Dunphy said. "If it isn't fraud, it's immoral." (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin)

(AP) ? Bill Dunphy thought his colonoscopy would be free.

His insurance company told him it would be covered 100 percent, with no copayment from him and no charge against his deductible. The nation's 1-year-old health law requires most insurance plans to cover all costs for preventive care including colon cancer screening. So Dunphy had the procedure in April.

Then the bill arrived: $1,100.

Dunphy, a 61-year-old Phoenix small business owner, angrily paid it out of his own pocket because of what some prevention advocates call a loophole. His doctor removed two noncancerous polyps during the colonoscopy. So while Dunphy was sedated, his preventive screening turned into a diagnostic procedure. That allowed his insurance company to bill him.

Like many Americans, Dunphy has a high-deductible insurance plan. He hadn't spent his deductible yet. So, on top of his $400 monthly premium, he had to pay the bill.

"That's bait and switch," Dunphy said. "If it isn't fraud, it's immoral."

President Barack Obama's health overhaul encourages prevention by requiring most insurance plans to pay for preventive care. On the plus side, more than 22 million Medicare patients and many more Americans with private insurance have received one or more free covered preventive services this year. From cancer screenings to flu shots, many services no longer cost patients money.

But there are confusing exceptions. As Dunphy found out, colonoscopies can go from free to pricey while the patient is under anesthesia.

Breast cancer screenings can cause confusion too. In Florida, Tampa Bay-area small business owner Dawn Thomas, 50, went for a screening mammogram. But she was told by hospital staff that her mammogram would be a diagnostic test ? not preventive screening ? because a previous mammogram had found something suspicious. (It turned out to be nothing.)

Knowing that would cost her $700, and knowing her doctor had ordered a screening mammogram, Thomas stood her ground.

"Either I get a screening today or I'm putting my clothes back on and I'm leaving," she remembers telling the hospital staff. It worked. Her mammogram was counted as preventive and she got it for free.

"A lot of women ... are getting labeled with that diagnostic code and having to pay year after year for that," Thomas said. "It's a loophole so insurance companies don't have to pay for it."

For parents with several children, costs can pile up with unexpected copays for kids needing shots. Even when copays are inexpensive, they can blemish a patient-doctor relationship. Robin Brassner of Jersey City, N.J., expected her doctor visit to be free. All she wanted was a flu shot. But the doctor charged her a $20 copay.

"He said no one really comes in for just a flu shot. They inevitably mention another ailment, so he charges," Brassner said. As a new patient, she didn't want to start the relationship by complaining, but she left feeling irritated. "Next time, I'll be a little more assertive about it," she said.

How confused are doctors?

"Extremely," said Cheryl Gregg Fahrenholz, an Ohio consultant who works with physicians. It's common for doctors to deal with 200 different insurance plans. And some older plans are exempt.

Should insurance now pay for aspirin? Aspirin to prevent heart disease and stroke is one of the covered services for older patients. But it's unclear whether insurers are supposed to pay only for doctors to tell older patients about aspirin ? or whether they're supposed to pay for the aspirin itself, said Dr. Jason Spangler, chief medical officer for the nonpartisan Partnership for Prevention.

Stop-smoking interventions are also supposed to be free. "But what does that mean?" Spangler asked. "Does it mean counseling? Nicotine replacement therapy? What about drugs (that can help smokers quit) like Wellbutrin or Chantix? That hasn't been clearly laid out."

But the greatest source of confusion is colonoscopies, a test for the nation's second leading cancer killer. Doctors use a thin, flexible tube to scan the colon and they can remove precancerous growths called polyps at the same time. The test gets credit for lowering colorectal cancer rates. It's one of several colon cancer screening methods highly recommended for adults ages 50 to 75.

But when a doctor screens and treats at the same time, the patient could get a surprise bill.

"It erodes a trust relationship the patients may have had with their doctors," said Dr. Joel Brill of the American Gastroenterological Association. "We get blamed. And it's not our fault,"

Cindy Holtzman, an insurance agent in Marietta, Ga., is telling clients to check with their insurance plans before a colonoscopy so they know what to expect.

"You could wake up with a $2,000 bill because they find that little bitty polyp," Holtzman said.

Doctors and prevention advocates are asking Congress to revise the law to waive patient costs ? including Medicare copays, which can run up to $230 ? for a screening colonoscopy where polyps are removed. The American Gastroenterological Association and the American Cancer Society are pushing Congress fix the problem because of the confusion it's causing for patients and doctors.

At least one state is taking action. After complaints piled up in Oregon, insurance regulators now are working with doctors and insurers to make sure patients aren't getting surprise charges when polyps are removed.

Florida's consumer services office also reports complaints about colonoscopies and other preventive care. California insurance broker Bonnie Milani said she's lost count of the complaints she's had about bills clients have received for preventive services.

"'Confusion' is not the word I'd apply to the medical offices producing the bills," Milani said. "The word that comes to mind for me ain't nearly so nice."

When it's working as intended, the new health law encourages more patients to get preventive care. Dr. Yul Ejnes, a Rhode Island physician, said he's personally told patients with high deductible plans about the benefit. They weren't planning to schedule a colonoscopy until they heard it would be free, Ejnes said.

If too many patients get surprise bills, however, that advantage could be lost, said Stephen Finan of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. He said it will take federal or state legislation to fix the colonoscopy loophole.

Dunphy, the Phoenix businessman, recalled how he felt when he got his colonoscopy bill, like something "underhanded" was going on.

"It's the intent of the law is to cover this stuff," Dunphy said. "It really made me angry."

khan logoOh, how I love Reddit AMA (Ask-Me-Anything) posts. In almost all cases, the inherent down-to-earth nature of a community-driven interview leads the most interesting of people to open up in genuine, honest ways that they otherwise might not in a one-on-one interview. Plus, they're almost always jammed with all sorts of interesting facts and stats. Take this AMA with Khan Academy's founder, Salman Khan, for example. Currently the top post on Reddit, Khan has spent the last two hours detailing everything from their recent growth and his workflow to the team's plans for the future.

FBI shooting range is popular deer hangout

(AP) ? Call it a playground for Bambi and G-Men, where imaginary criminals are hunted and deer are the spectators.

The 547-acre FBI Academy, where some of the nation's best marksmen fire off more than 1 million bullets every month, happens to be one of the safest places for deer during hunting season.

The property on the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., is home to some of the FBI's most elite forces and training programs as well as a de facto wildlife refuge where deer, fox, wild turkeys, groundhogs and vultures roam fearless and free.

In recent years, a black bear was spotted running across a parking lot, and a groundhog cornered an FBI agent coming out of the cafeteria, hoping to score some human food, FBI spokesman Kurt Crawford said. Turkey vultures are often seen perched atop the 500,000-square-foot national crime lab where the FBI analyzes evidence, including the remains of the former al-Qaida leader in Iraq.

The wild animals are as much a fixture at the academy as the hostage rescue team and criminal profilers.

The most common furry friends on the sprawling campus some 30 miles outside Washington are the deer, a regular at the shooting ranges, driving courses and physical training trails.

On a December afternoon, deer grazed above one of the academy's 16 practice shooting ranges. They stood just 15 feet away from the paper targets. Nearby, shots popped loudly from a Colt M4 Carbine rifle, and the white-tailed deer did not flinch.

"They're pretty immune to the sound," said Sean Boyle, supervisory special agent bomb technician and principal firearms instructor for the Critical Incident Response Group based at the academy. The deer typically graze on top of the berm, about 15 feet away from the targets and rarely go directly in the line of fire. Boyle said he doesn't recall an instance where a deer was shot accidentally.

"It's like they think, 'We've pushed the limit for this far, and all our generations have pushed the limit for this far,'" Boyle said. "They're just so docile around here. They don't know what a gun is."

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries does not keep direct tabs on the deer population at the FBI academy, but a spokeswoman said statewide the deer population has remained about the same over the past decade, partly because of regulated hunting. Licensed deer hunters are allowed on parts of the Marine Corps base but not at the academy where the FBI does not hunt its animals.

At the FBI Academy, the deer have even become part of the training in some of the driving courses, said Tim Moles, the supervisory special agent who oversees the Tactical and Emergency Vehicle Operations Center, where recruits learn to avoid crashing their cars and conduct surveillance without being spotted. The deer are convenient when recruits learn to avoid collisions, Moles said. "There's times when it seems like they're playing chicken with us," Moles said. "We respect them because they can do damage. We'd rather avoid all deer stories in this end of the academy."

For the most part, the deer have stayed out of trouble. Twice, however, deer have eaten freshly-planted pansies at the academy's 9/11 memorial courtyard, Crawford said. Eventually a fence was built to keep the flowers off limits.

Deer have been known to interrupt physical training, too.

"We've had the deer walk across the middle of the track during the 300-meter sprint," said Susann Dreiling, unit chief of the academy's physical training unit.

To become an agent, recruits must pass a physical fitness test. They are scored on how fast they can run and how many push-ups and sit-ups they perform. Sometimes, training will involve running a quarter-mile path along the lake area of the academy, stopping for push-ups, running some more and breaking to box, Dreiling said.

During these exercises, a mother and her fawns are often close by.

"They just stand there and watch as if they're evaluating them," Dreiling said, "just like the instructors are."

Obama spends Christmas with family, military

President Barack Obama blended his roles as a father and commander-in-chief this Christmas, exchanging presents and singing carols with his family, then greeting U.S. service members stationed at a Marine base in Hawaii.

The president and his family woke up early Sunday to open gifts, the White House said, then had breakfast and sang Christmas carols at the multimillion-dollar house they rent in Kailua Beach, near Honolulu.

Obama made two trips on Christmas to nearby Marine Corps Base Hawaii, first to attend church services at the base chapel. The president dressed casually in dark khaki pants and a short-sleeve blue shirt, and his wife and daughters donned sundresses for Christmas services on a bright, breezy day on the island of Oahu.

After spending a few hours at their rental home, the president and Michelle Obama returned to the base to visit with several hundred service members and their families, as they have done in past years.

The Obamas posed for photos, signed autographs and stopped to chat with the military families gathered in the dining hall, where roast beef, salad and apple pie were on the Christmas Day menu.

Eight-month-old Cooper Wall Wagner, son of Capt. Greg Wagner, got up close and personal with the president, grabbing his face, then sticking his fingers in Obama's mouth.

An amused Obama said he thought the baby just liked his "big nose" ? a comment that drew laughter from several of the Marines.

Many of the service members stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii have deployed to Afghanistan, as well as Iraq, where the last American troops were withdrawn earlier this month.

Back in the Washington area, Vice President Joe Biden and wife Jill Biden spent Christmas visiting wounded service members and their families at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Obama also called 10 service members stationed around the world ? two from each branch of the military ? on Christmas Eve. The White House said he thanked them for their service and the sacrifice of being away from their families at the holidays.

The Obamas were wrapping up their Christmas festivities with dinner at the rental home with friends and family. Among those joining the first family in Hawaii are the president's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives on Oahu, and several friends Obama has known since high school.

The president has kept a low profile since arriving in Hawaii on Friday evening to start a vacation delayed by the stalemate in Washington over extending payroll tax cuts. He has no public events planned, and his only outings are expected to be to the golf course or to take his daughters for shave ice, a Hawaiian snow cone.

The Obamas are expected to return to Washington shortly after New Year's Day.

Man killed amid Britain's post-Christmas sales

Police examine blood stained clothes at the scene of a second stabbing close to the junction of Oxford Street and Regent Street in central London, Monday Dec. 26, 2011. The victim of the second attack was a male who had been stabbed in the legs. His injuries were not life threatening, police confirmed. The male is receiving treatment in hospital and it is "too early to say" whether the attack was linked to an earlier stabbing, a Scotland Yard spokesman said. LONDON (AP) ? A teenager was fatally stabbed Monday and a second man wounded in attacks on London's most famous retail street as thousands of shoppers flocked to Britain's capital seeking post-Christmas bargains.

The killing of the 18-year-old man on Oxford Street ? and a second wounding in the same road ? did little to deter shoppers crowding into neighboring stores in the landmark shopping district. Bargain hunters were also largely untroubled by a subway strike which badly disrupted the city's public transport services.

Selfridges ? close to the scene of Monday's stabbing and one of Britain's most popular department stores ? reported its biggest ever first hour of trading Monday morning, while the New West End Company, which represents traders on central London's shopping streets, reported 15 million pounds (US$23.5 million) in sales in the first three hours of trading.

Jace Tyrrell, of the New West End Company, said hundreds of thousands of people had visited central London retailers, despite action by police to cordon off parts of Oxford Street and temporarily close some stores.

"These incidents are extremely rare on Oxford Street and we understand arrests have been made," she said. "The emergency services were quick to respond and have cordoned off the street as they continue with their investigations. We are working to ensure the street is open to businesses and shoppers tomorrow."

Tyrrell said shopkeepers had requested a meeting with police to discuss the incidents. "We understand both incidents involved gangs of youth who were known to each other (and) the police, and did not involve individual shoppers," she said.

London's air ambulance helicopter had earlier rushed to the street following the fatal stabbing.

Authorities said the teenage victim died before medics could administer help, while amateur video footage showed police struggling to part large crowds of shopper to allow emergency vehicles to reach the man.

Police erected a tent outside a Foot Locker sports store as they carried out investigations and confirmed that about ten people had been arrested in connection with the death.

Officers said a second stabbing took place close by ? on the corner of Oxford Street and Regent Street ? but insisted it wasn't immediately known if the two incidents were linked.

Det. Chief Insp. Mark Dunne, of London's Metropolitan police, said two groups of young people appeared to have become involved in a large-scale altercation before the teenager's death.

Dunne said that little more was known about the circumstances, but there were likely to be large numbers of witnesses. "This is probably the busiest place in the United Kingdom right now, on the busiest shopping day," he told reporters at the scene.

"A number of weapons have been recovered from that scene ? whether I have got the murder weapon I don't know. There's an assortment of items, but no guns," he said.

In the second attack, a 21-year-old man was stabbed in the leg and is being treated in hospital for his wound.

Police said in a statement that three men had been arrested, but it was "too early to say whether this incident is linked to a fatal stabbing on Oxford Street."

On London's subway network, the ASLEF train drivers' labor union staged a one-day strike to demand extra pay and additional time off for members working on the public holiday.

Despite the disruptions, huge crowds ? some lining up outside stores from midnight ? rushed into department stores in London and other British cities as soon as doors opened early Monday.

The London Underground, the organization that manages the subway system, condemned the move, saying it was pointless and demonstrated "a complete disregard for our customers." Authorities said extra buses were running in main shopping areas to cater to the increased flow of travelers on one of the year's busiest shopping days.

The ASLEF union has warned it plans to stage three more strikes in January and February if the dispute is not resolved.

UC Berkeley picks Google over Microsoft, talks why

UC Berkeley says Gmail faster, more flexible

The University of California in Berkeley has posted a full breakdown of a recent decision to pick Google's Gmail and Google Apps over Microsoft's Office 365 in what represented a changing of the guard. Although not an unambiguous win, Google pulled ahead by being free, taking a fast six to ten weeks to implement, and popular. Using its system would require much less of an overhaul than Microsoft's, Berkeley said, and majority of the students and staff alike already knew the apps.

Microsoft's system, by contrast, would have needed a much larger reworking of the university's infrastructure. It also wouldn't have supported multiple mail accounts, UC Berkeley said. There was also no home-friendly equivalent to Office 365, which is primarily intended for enterprise users.

Microsoft's primary advantages were in calendars, where those with very deep calendars would have an edge, and in security. Even then, however, Microsoft's advantages were generally smaller than expected. Either service could sync with mobile devices, although Google's services understandably have stronger Android support in addition to iPhones and Windows Phone. Microsoft doesn't yet support its syncing with the BlackBerry.

The Google win hasn't sat well with Microsoft, the university's Shelton Waggener said. It has been asking for changes to the report that would more closely favor its own point of view. The requests, if granted, wouldn't change the ultimate verdict.

Running Berkeley's main messaging and calendars is both a major coup for Google, which is still fighting to establish a reputation in the workplace for its web apps, as well as a symbolic defeat for Microsoft. The Windows developer was once considered unassailable for business and institutional deals, but the rise of the web has reduced the dependency on the local software still at Microsoft's core. Microsoft typically loses hundreds of millions of dollars each quarter in its online initiatives where Google is one of the most profitable. [via Wired, image via brainchildvn on Flickr]

A Few Chinese Bad News Bears To Spoil A Happy New Year

By?EconMatters

Goldman's Jim O'Neill?noted?in a recent interview that the world's future prosperity depends on China's growth. While we don't totally agree with that assessment as we see China as one of the many contributory factors towards world's future, there are some recent bad news bears coming out of China that could spell troubles for markets, at least in 2012.?

?

Export Growth Could Drop to Zero in 2012?

?

The General Administration of Customs released November trade figures showing export growth continued to decelerate and was at their most sluggish in two years. ?At a news conference, China's Commerce Ministry spokesperson warned,

"The overall trade environment next year for China will be complicated, partly due to the economic uncertainties in the European countries, and I should say that?the export situation in the first quarter of next year will be very severe."

Wang Tao, an economist at UBS Securities noted China's?growth is expected to "drop to zero in 2012," which will have a "sizable negative impact on the economy," and that the export figures underline "shifts in the export structure - some traditional lower-end and labor-intensive sectors may be losing market share to cheaper producers." (See Chart Below)?

?

FDI Sees Its First YoY Drop in 28 Months?

?

Part of China's recent explosive growth has to do with foreign investments pouring into the country to capitalize on the expected burgeoning middle class income growth. But in November, China experienced its first year-on-year dip of 9.76% ?in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 28 months?primarily from a sharp drop in inflows from the United States, while investments from the European Union -- China's single largest trading partner -- were essentially flat.??(See Chart Below).

?

Moreover, this drop came on top of the first net capital outflow from China in four years in October, asinvestors fled emerging markets due to Europe's festering debt crisis.

?

?

Chart Source: ChinaDaily.com, 16 Dec. 2011

?

Manufacturing Tanks To Near Three-Year Low

?

China?s manufacturing contracted for the first time since February 2009 with the Purchasing Managers? Index (PMI) fell to 49.0 in November from 50.4 in October.

?

The December number did not bode well either as?the?HSBC flash manufacturing PMI?an early indicator of China's industrial activity, showed China's factory output shrank again in December after new orders fell. (See Chart Below)

?

Chart Source: HSBC, 15 Dec. 2011

?

PBOC Reversing Course - How Bad Is The Economy??

In early December, PBOC (The People's Bank of China), China's central bank, announced the first cut in banks? reserve requirements since 2008, just two hours before the U.S. Federal Reserve led a?global dollar liquidity injection?to ease Europe?s sovereign debt crisis. ?And there could be more easing on the way, as Reuters?reported?that data showed Chinese banks made 562 billion yuan of new loans in November, a shade more than forecast as Beijing gently eases tight credit conditions.

?

China has made controlling prices a top priority this year and implemented a series of tightening measures. ??Inflation fell from a three-year high of 6.5% in July to 4.2% in November, which is?still above Beijing's current inflation target of 4%. ?And?China's inflation battle is far from over as?rising?labor costs?and higher input prices are among the factors that will continue to push up consumer price levels.

?

So?the more interesting question is?how bad is the real economy for China to reverse course taking on the risk of re-surging inflation pressures?

?

Escalating Social Unrest

?

Inflation and social unrest goes hand-in-hand and has toppled quite a few governments in the history book. ?Judging from the recent?Wukan Siege, the social unrest in China (due to disputes in wages, land grab, etc.) seems to have escalated in both scale and duration. ?This could suggest a more?serious mid-to-long-term undercurrent?that would be challenging and delicate to handle for the central government.

?

Conclusion

?

From what we discussed so far, it is evidenta pronounced China slowdown in the next year or so is inevitablewith the nation's export-centric economy struggling with waning global demand, while undergoing domestic structural economic and demographic shifts. ?Moreover, there could besome hidden debt bombsas a recent Bloomberg?finding?suggests?that?China's banks may be understating their exposure?to runaway local borrowing by possibly billions of dollars that is raising fears of a government bailout.

?

How Beijing steers its economic and monetary policies in the next 2-3 years will be key to balance the country's inflation, growth and stability. ?While we see a very low probability of a?hard landing case for China, but if Jim O'Neill is right about how much the world depends on China's growth, then don't count on that much world prosperity, at least in 2012.
