BOX SCORE: Australia 70, Sweden 53
BOX SCORE: United States 96, Czech Republic 53
Kazan, Russia --- No double-doubles this time, but the end-result is all that mattered to both Cameron Bairstow and Alex Kirk. Bairstow led Australia with eight rebounds and three assists, and Alex Kirk had two points and four rebounds as both Australia and the United States earned wins. Australia defeated Sweden 70-53 and the United States defeated the Czech Republic 96-53.
Both teams have tomorrow off before returning to the court on Wednesday. Australia (2-0) will take on Canada (1-0) at 3 a.m. Mountain Time while the United States (2-0) will battle Sweden (0-2) at 11 a.m. Mountain Time. The US/Sweden matchup will be live on ESPN3, and shown on ESPN on tape delay at 5 p.m. Mountain.
Australia slowly but surely pulled away over the course of four quarters, leading 13-12 after one, 29-19 at the half, and 48-33 after three. Bairstow, who went 1-for-7 from the field, hit his only basket early in the game, making it 4-2 Australia. However, he led Australia in rebounds for the second straight game after recording 12 yesterday in a win over the Czech Republic. He also added a team-high three assists, giving him seven for the tournament.
In his three-year Lobo career, Bairstow has only recorded as many as three assists in a game twice, and he has now done it twice at the World University Games.
The United States were never threatened by the Czech's as the US led 20-9 after one, 41-22 at the break, and 66-38 after three.
Kirk saw limited action, recording four rebounds in seven minutes of action. His free throws with 2:04 left gave the US all 12 players in the scoring column. He then blocked a shot, got a rebound, and started a fast-break that led to a dunk by Will Sheehy.

Kirk is now averaging 6.0 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game for USA Basketball.

The top two teams in each of the four groups advance to the medal round.
