Exploding BBQ propane tank damages Oregon City home, kills family ...

An Oregon City family lost a dog and a large chunk of their home when a propane tank from their barbecue gas grill exploded, according to Clackamas fire officials.

Clackamas Fire District 1 spokesman Steve McAdoo said the blast took out the entire back portion of a home at 143 Valley View Dr. on Tuesday. Firefighters responded to a call? of heavy smoke and flames as high as 20 feet from the area at 5:41 p.m. The family of three was able to escape the blaze through the front door, said McAdoo, but the heat and smoke from the explosion killed one of their four pets.

"The father was shutting the grill down, left for a few minutes and then heard a big boom,? he said. ?The fire was fast and did a lot of damage.?

The gas grill was positioned up against the house, under a covered patio. Firefighters were able to retrieve some clothing from the home's charred remains but everything else appeared to be destroyed.
